These days we recommend utilizing a .223 due to the cost of the ammo when compared to other rifles.  Additionally, a .22-250 is utilized and recommended by  many other long rangeprairie dog hunting enthusiasts.   In reality a standard .22 will do the trick, but pick a firearm you enjoy shooting and are accurate at a minimum of 200 yards out.

The Prairie Dog is a rodent that is found throughout the plains states of the United States.  It is a native species of North America inhabiting several of the states located within the United States and ranges down into Mexico.  Like the name implies, the Prairie Dog often makes a barking noise very similar to what a domesticated dog sounds like.

Due to the wide open terrain that the prairie dog lives in those hunters looking for a challenge to shoot game at an extremely long distance can experience a true challenge with long range prairie dog hunting.  If you are an enthusiast of long range shooting the prairie dog will offer you a number of shots at four hundred plus yards.  Of course you can also see many prairie dogs at shorter ranges and quickly stack up a body count of these nuisance rodents.  When looking for grounds to hunt prairie dogs, most land owners are extremely happy to deal with and welcome hunters to help cut down upon their population of quickly multiplying ground squirrels.
