Like most upland game birds, the francolin prefers to sneak away on foot undetected to hunters. However, will aggressively takeoff and fly away when disturbed. Many compare the strong takeoff patterns of the francolin to that of the pheasant. We recommend that you equip yourself with an experienced pointing dog, such as a German shorthair, English pointer or Brittany spaniel. In addition to a quality dog, you will want to select the appropriate hardware. When looking at what type of firearm to utilize we would suggest using a 16 gauge or 20 gauge shotgun, additionally a 12 gauge shotgun will work fine. Although these birds are strong flyers an experienced hunter can enjoy stepping away from an auto-loading shotgun and try the challenge of an over-and-under or side-by-side shotgun.

francolin
Throughout the World there are currently over forty species of Francolins. Natively, these birds are found in Asia and Africa. During the 1960’s the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service introduced several of these game bird species into the warm U.S. climate of Hawaii. Throughout Hawaii it is typical to find and identify several types of francolins including black, gray, and erckels. Depending upon the type of francolin you are hunting their range in Hawaii can drastically vary from low land coastal waters to high elevations thriving in rockier or grassy terrains.
